山茶属半阴性植物，宜于散射光下生长，怕直射光暴晒，幼苗需遮荫。但长期过阴对山茶生长不利，叶片薄、开花少，影响观赏价值。成年植株需较多光照，才能利于花芽的形成和开花。
露地栽培，选择土层深厚、疏松，排水性好，酸碱度出5-6最为适宜，碱性土壤不适宜茶花生长。盆栽土用肥沃疏松、微酸性的壤土或腐叶土。

浇水：山茶盆景的培养要保持土壤湿润状态，但不宜过湿，防止时干时湿。一般在春季可适当多浇，以利发芽抽梢；夏季坚持早、晚浇水，最好喷叶面水，使叶片湿透，不要用急水直浇、满灌，不宜浇热水，避开中午前后高温时浇水；秋季浇水要适量；冬季则宜在中午前后浇水，可每隔二三天喷一次水。

施肥：春季山茶换盆后，不需马上施肥。入夏后茎叶生长旺盛育期，每半月施肥1次或用"卉友"21-7-7酸肥。9月现蕾至开花期，增施1-2次磷钾肥。在夏末初秋山茶开始形成花芽，每根枝梢宜留1-2个花蕾，不宜过多，以免消耗养分，影响主花蕾开花。摘蕾时注意叶芽位置，以保持株形美观。同时，将干枯的废蕾随手摘除。
