斗彩之谓：
“斗彩”的称谓，历来争论很多，许多的理解和认识都来源于道听途说或凭空想像。现在比较一致的认识，斗彩的“斗”，源于景德镇地方方言，有拼接之意。具体而言，就是以青花勾画轮廓线，施釉烧制后，于釉上在轮廓线内填彩，再以低温烧制而成。其工艺难度远较青花或五彩为高，故史之斗彩器为“瓷之贵族”。 
历史上最有名的斗彩，是成化斗彩鸡缸杯。关于鸡缸杯的传说很多，无非是谈及斗彩鸡缸杯之珍贵。其中一个是这样：民国时期，一小贩往农村收古玩，见一农妇以一精美小杯盛肥皂，索购，农妇立知是宝，一咬牙，开出“一个大洋”的“高价”，小贩大喜，转手便得二百大洋，再一转手便数千大洋，最后以数万大洋为洋人购得。坊间相传，不足为据，却显示出“斗彩”之名贵。
斗彩之美：
斗彩作为一种装饰手段，于刘新园先生之考证，最早出现在明宣德时期，成化一朝为最，康雍乾为另一高峰。斗彩之美曰：艳而雅。艳者：色彩缤纷，诸色杂陈，光彩夺目。雅者：色繁而不杂，华美而无俗气。究其原由，实为青花与五彩之完美结合（后代亦有青花斗粉彩）。青花之雅，将五彩之华勾勒其间，美不胜收。具体而微，又有很大的差异，有偏于雅者，有偏于艳者。
