明代以前的色釉瓷史,无论从时间、地位还是影响、成就,无与青瓷相提并论者。青瓷至宋已至颠峰,有宋一代,从四大名窑之汝、哥、官、均,至北方之耀州窑,南方之龙泉窑,无不烧制青瓷。其成就,早已超越“九秋风露越窑开,夺得千峰翠色来”的唐代越窑青瓷。

宋代青瓷之盛,一方面固与时代之风尚、帝王将相文人雅士之审美趣味有关,另一方面也深受制瓷工艺的局限。彼时固已有青花之雏型,但其成熟尚待时日,而彩瓷的发展,在经历了唐三彩之辉煌后,也进入了漫长的沉睡期,因其风格实与宋之情味大异其趣。

后世青花、五彩、斗彩、粉彩之发展成熟、异彩份呈,迅速取代青瓷,甚至使历史上以青瓷著称的各大名窑无以为继。而青瓷也渐渐远离人们的视野,成为帝王将相之专属。明清以降,青瓷多为官窑为皇室烧造,地点也已集中在景德镇。尤其康雍乾盛世,官窑极力仿制历代青瓷名器,虽曰仿制,实多有创新,其原料、工艺、质量也已远超前贤。

此时之青瓷,色调变化极为丰富,曰天青,曰粉青,曰豆青,曰冬青,曰冻青等等等等,其实亦无明确的界限,有的只是称谓之不同,大体而言,其色调依次渐深。
