明代以前的色釉瓷史，无论从时间、地位还是影响、成就，无与青瓷相提并论者。青瓷至宋已至颠峰，有宋一代，从四大名窑之汝、哥、官、均，至北方之耀州窑，南方之龙泉窑，无不烧制青瓷。其成就，早已超越“九秋风露越窑开，夺得千峰翠色来”的唐代越窑青瓷。
宋代青瓷之盛，一方面固与时代之风尚、帝王将相文人雅士之审美趣味有关，另一方面也深受制瓷工艺的局限。彼时固已有青花之雏型，但其成熟尚待时日，而彩瓷的发展，在经历了唐三彩之辉煌后，也进入了漫长的沉睡期，因其风格实与宋之情味大异其趣。
后世青花、五彩、斗彩、粉彩之发展成熟、异彩份呈，迅速取代青瓷，甚至使历史上以青瓷著称的各大名窑无以为继。而青瓷也渐渐远离人们的视野，成为帝王将相之专属。明清以降，青瓷多为官窑为皇室烧造，地点也已集中在景德镇。尤其康雍乾盛世，官窑极力仿制历代青瓷名器，虽曰仿制，实多有创新，其原料、工艺、质量也已远超前贤。
此时之青瓷，色调变化极为丰富，曰天青，曰粉青，曰豆青，曰冬青，曰冻青等等等等，其实亦无明确的界限，有的只是称谓之不同，大体而言，其色调依次渐深。
