“斗彩”的称谓，历来争论很多，许多的理解和认识都来源于道听途说或凭空想像。现在比较一致的认识，斗彩的“斗”，源于景德镇地方方言，有拼接之意。具体而言，就是以青花勾画轮廓线，施釉烧制后，于釉上在轮廓线内填彩，再以低温烧制而成。其工艺难度远较青花或五彩为高，故史之斗彩器为“瓷之贵族”。
斗彩作为一种装饰手段，于刘新园先生之考证，最早出现在明宣德时期，成化一朝为最，康雍乾为另一高峰。斗彩之美曰：艳而雅。艳者：色彩缤纷，诸色杂陈，光彩夺目。雅者：色繁而不杂，华美而无俗气。究其原由，实为青花与五彩之完美结合（后代亦有青花斗粉彩）。青花之雅，将五彩之华勾勒其间，美不胜收。具体而微，又有很大的差异，有偏于雅者，有偏于艳者。
雍正斗彩瓷器无论从造型设计。还是纹饰布局、色彩搭配以及填彩工艺，均进人了一个崭新的阶段。与从前的装饰所不同的是，青花线内所填彩料，填彩准确，工整细腻，不越边线，亦无端填，在有限的青花框内，将彩料进行渲染和烘托，改变了明代双线平涂的局限，使纹饰更加清逸秀丽。。
狮子滚绣球，盖碗身、盖上以斗彩绘制狮子滚绣球纹饰，狮子神态威武，曲身摆尾，长尾分叉，极富动感。狮是百兽之王，双狮滚绣球民间称之为"狮子滚绣球"，表示喜庆吉祥欢乐之意。
