在中国明朝覆灭后，18世纪清朝开始后一度封锁海上航路，即“海禁”。造成的后果是景德镇无法接到来自东印度公司的外贸订单，直接导致减缓了中国瓷器的发展和海外市场的占据。此时崛起的日本瓷器被热捧，而初生的Meissen为了接到除贵族以外的外贸订单，也是从模仿日式柿右卫门的伊万里瓷器开始为欧洲广为知晓。日式伊万里瓷器的风格特点在于其模仿景德镇瓷器后，慢慢拥有了自己的风格，即红蓝金彩。其流行程度以至于后来重新开始的景德镇也被要求以伊万里瓷器的风格制造瓷器，其产品被称为中国伊万里瓷器。而中国和德国Meissen在当时的优势即是烧制后的洁白，而日式呈乳白。仿制伊万里瓷器的这段历史并没有让Meissen瓷器显得落后，反而凸显了因为快速发展的科技和严谨的手工业所带动的奋起直追。
