《景德镇陶歌》中有一首描述祭红的诗歌：“官古窑成重霁红，最难全美费良工。霜天晴昼精心合，一样搏烧百不同”。
这首诗主要是谈论祭红烧造之难。官古窑是指民窑中烧的最好的作坊，品质不输官窑，仍觉“最难”。精工细作且不论，还要看天，晴雨、冷热、气温高低，都要恰到好处。但就算万事俱备，结果仍是“百不同”。所以民谚有云：要想穷，就烧红。实际上，自永宣创祭红，有明一代，民间根本不得一见，甚至永宣之后，官窑也几成绝响。直至清康熙后，方始重烧。民间也只有极少数顶尖的高手能够烧造。即使御窑厂，每次烧红亦是大大挑战。这些当然还都是表面现像，是结果。深究一下过程，祭红的烧制更令人觉得不可思议。
现代科学的研究发现，祭红属铜红釉，铜红的呈色必须在高温流动的状态下才能完成，但祭红并不流动，或极少的流动。这在现代科学的逻辑中，是个悖论。另一个高难度的动作是烧窑。古代柴窑，一窑之内，温度、气氛差别很大，而祭红的烧造极为敏感，适合烧造的位置很少，只有一两个匣钵，故被称为“寸金地”。民间古代更有凄婉的传说：民女为烧祭红，跳入窑中祭窑，方始烧成。尽管当代科技昌明，工业发达，祭红的烧造技术比之以往，已有大大的提升，但仍非轻易能为。在传统制瓷的品类中，仍是难度系数极大的一种。
不过祭红的闻名，最根本的原因，仍是红釉之美。乾隆帝有诗云：“晕如雨后霁霞红，出火还加微炙工；世上朱砂非所拟，西方宝石致难同；插花应使花羞色，比画翻嗤画是空。”可谓鲜而不过，娇而不艳，沉静自然，芳华内敛。不过历代文人所述甚少，也难怪，几人得见？！
